Gwen & Kate's Library

Two sisters' reviews of Young Adult and Middle Grade books, inspired by their lovely library.

Gwen’s A to Z Bookish Survey

I got the idea for this survey from the fantastic blog Always Opinionated Girl, but the original survey comes from the Perpetual Page Turner.

Author I’ve Read the Most Books From:

  • Tamora Pierce – 20 books (and half I’ve read more than once)

Best Sequel Ever:

  • Fire by Kristin Cashore (following Graceling)

Currently Reading:

  • Dangerous by Shannon Hale

Drink of Choice While Reading:

  • TEA! Specifically decaf English breakfast with milk (and some maple syrup).

E-reader or Physical Book?

  • Physical book definitely — e-readers just don’t smell the same! (And I don’t have an actual e-reader but sometimes read on the computer and then I often get  distracted — I usually start blogging).

Fictional Character I Probably Would Have Dated in High School (Currently):

  • I’d probably say Jaimy from the Bloody Jack Adventures series — good-looking, chivalrous, and not too randy compared too the others in the series (this is definitely an ideal choice, and not very realistic — I’m actually dating someone as nerdy as I am who really fits my character a lot better than Jaimy ever could, but he doesn’t have a British accent).

Glad I Gave This Book a (Second) Chance:

  • Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Hidden Gem Book(s):

  • Well, besides Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith, I’d say Wolf Tower by Tanith Lee, Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier, and Wise Child by Monica Furlong.

Important Moment in My Reading Life:

  • Reading the beginning (I’m still working on it) of Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond — it got me interested in the non fiction (mostly historical) genre, and now I have a huge list of books I bought, ready to be read and covered in notes.

Just Finished:

  • The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Kinds of Books I Won’t Read:

  • Vampire or werewolf paranormal books (anything by Cassandra Clare, Stephanie Meyer, etc.), or horror.

Longest Book I’ve Ever Read:

  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling (870 pages).

Major Book Hangover:

  • Emerald Green by Kerstin Gier

Number of Bookcases I Own:

  • Kate and I have 5 bookshelves in our library.

One Book I Have Read Multiple Times:

  • Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier (4 times — and many more in the future)

Preferred Place to Read:

  • Depending on the season, usually in the big beanbag chair in our library.

Quote that Inspired Me:

  • “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library” – Jorge Louis Borges

Reading Regret:

  • Loving Harry Potter the first time I read it — it was more normal to fangirl over it at a younger age, and now I feel a little too old (not that that stops me at all!)

Series I Started and Need to Finish (all books are already out):

  • The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner (I have yet to read The King of Attolia and A Conspiracy of Kings) — although I’m not sure this counts, since Goodreads claims that there are still two more books coming!

Three of My All-Time Favorite Books:

  • Graceling by Kristin Cashore, Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder, and Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers.

Unapologetic Fangirl For:

  • Harry Potter series and the Bloody Jack Adventures series!

Very Excited for This Release More Than All The Others:

  • Wild Rover No More by L.A. Meyer (final Jacky Faber book!)

Worst Bookish Habit:

  • Overdue library books. Definitely.

X Marks the Spot (start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book):

  • Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder

Your (My) Latest Book Purchase:

  • Summers at Castle Auburn by Sharon Shinn

ZZZ-Snacher Book (last book that kept me up WAY late):

  • Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

What are your thoughts on any of these bookish questions? Anything you have to share?
