Gwen & Kate’s Recommendation: Welcome to Night Vale Podcasts

A dear friend of mine, Lydia, recommended this podcast to Kate and me. In fact, it is a miracle we hadn’t heard of it already, since we are frequent podcast listeners and Welcome to Night Vale is high on the top ten most popular podcast list on iTunes. Lydia had a hard time describing it to us, and once we began listening we realized why. There is no good way to describe or explain Welcome to Night Vale. So here is the explanation from the Commonplace Books website, which produces the podcast.

“Welcome to Night Vale is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff’s Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events. Turn on your radio and hide.”

The podcast is narrated by the character Cecil Baldwin, the radio announcer in the strange town of Night Vale. He talks about the local news, high school sport updates, the community calendar, traffic, and the weather section, which is always a song. Although there is not really a plot in the story of Night Vale, it is recommended to listen to the podcasts in order. Some stories do develop, such as the blooming romance between Cecil and as he claims “Night Vale’s favorite scientist,” Carlos. The dog park is a wonderful example of the creepy strangeness of Night Vale and its community radio that attracts so many listeners.
